REGINA, SK – Great Plains College is pleased to announce the addition of an innovative new program at its Rosetown Program Centre—the Carpentry and Production Line Welding certificate. The program is the first of its kind in the province, offering dual certificates and two apprenticeship and work streams.
The 8-month program will give students a chance to develop introductory skills in carpentry, production line welding, skills and safety training, and a host of other construction skills from electrical and plumbing to energy efficient construction, all of which will be brought together with a unique tiny home capstone project. The program will also give students exposure to leaders within the construction industry.
“Great Plains College is always looking for innovative programming that will give our students the best opportunities to learn and enter the workforce, and this program hits both those marks,” explained Great Plains College president and CEO David Keast. “With a chance to develop skills in multiple construction disciplines and complete a capstone project, students will be well equipped to enter the construction industry, or pursue further education in their chosen trade.”
The capstone project will give students real work experience through the construction of a tiny home. The blueprints for the tiny home will be provided by program partner and home design leader, Robinson Residential Design Inc.
“We’re excited to partner with Great Plains College to see their students bring one of our tiny homes to life,” said John Robinson, principal designer and partner at Robinson Residential Design Inc. “Tiny homes are quickly becoming one of the most popular housing forms thanks to their simplicity, affordability and freedom of movement. We hope this capstone project gives students a chance to put their skillsets to practice.”
Graduates of the program will receive multiple certifications, including First Aid/CPR/AED and Fall Protection certifications, and an Applied Certificate in Production Line Welding and an Applied Certificate in Carpentry (both from Saskatchewan Polytechnic). Credit for apprenticeship training and trade time will be available.
Applications are now being accepted for the program, which is set to begin September 2018. Individuals who apply before April 30, 2018 will be considered for two Entrance Scholarships up to a total of $5,500.
