KINDERSLEY, SK – Great Plains College is pleased to announce the addition of the Practical Nursing program to its Kindersley Campus program offerings. This full-time diploma program is set to start in fall 2025 and applications will open in fall 2024.
“Licensed practical nurses are a vital part of the healthcare system and we know there is a shortage of trained staff in many communities across Saskatchewan, including Kindersley and surrounding areas,” said Keleah Ostrander, vice president, programs and students at Great Plains College. “We’re excited to grow our healthcare program offerings in Kindersley to help train more students for a rewarding and in-demand career in nursing.”
The 2-year program is delivered through a combination of hands-on classroom learning and practicums where students will receive clinical experience in a variety of settings from pharmacology and acute care to obstetrics and long-term care. Clinical experiences will take place in Kindersley and throughout the region. Upon graduation, students will be prepared to write the exam to become a licensed practical nurse in Saskatchewan.
“We know that many students stay where they train so we’re optimistic that this program, in addition to the Continuing Care Assistant program, will help meet the staffing needs of local healthcare facilities,” added Ostrander.
While the program won’t see its first Practical Nursing students in the building until fall 2025, plans are already underway to develop a lab space on campus for healthcare programs. More details will be released soon on how local organizations and businesses can contribute to the development of the healthcare lab.
“On behalf of the SHA and Kindersley Integrated Health Facility we are thrilled with the announcement of the Practical Nursing program coming to Kindersley,” said Anika Becker, clinical services manager for the Kindersley Integrated Health Facility. “We recognize the importance of practical nurses and the significant contributions they make to our health-care system. Practical nurses undergo comprehensive training that equip them with the skills and knowledge necessary to fill crucial roles within the health-care field. Together, we will strive to build a stronger, more resilient health-care workforce for the future.”
