SWIFT CURRENT, SK – Great Plains College is pleased to announce the addition of a new Production Line Welding program to its Swift Current Campus program offerings. This full-time, 9-week program is set to run April 29-June 28, 2024 and will be offered tuition-free this academic year.
“At Great Plains College, we strive to deliver programs that meet local labour market needs and have a direct path to employment for our graduates,” said Keleah Ostrander, Vice President, Programs and Students at Great Plains College. “We continue to see the need for skilled trades in our region, including a high demand for skilled workers in our local manufacturing businesses. This Production Line Welding program is a win-win as we have the infrastructure and resources already in place to get the program up and running quickly, there’s industry need and connection to employment for graduates, and we’re able to provide a tuition-free program, helping remove a common barrier to accessing post-secondary education.”
The hands-on program will prepare students for a career in a high-volume welding production environment such as a shop or on an assembly line. It will focus on the gas metal arc (MIG) welding process, while also covering blue print reading, cutting processes, trade safety and essential skills for the workplace. The program will be instructed by Jared McKenzie, a highly experienced welder and 15-year instructor of the Welding certificate program at the college.
“In addition to the technical skills that will be taught, this program will also offer job readiness training, including resume building, interview skills and other essential skills for the workplace to ensure students are able to take advantage of the industry connections they will make throughout the program and successfully begin their new career in production line welding,” added Ostrander. “We look forward to welcoming our first cohort of students to campus in April.”
Applications to the program are now open and anyone interested in applying is encouraged to do so quickly as the program will be filled on a first-come, first-serve basis. Local employers that have individual employees interested in this training are also welcome to share the information and encourage individual applications.
