MAPLE CREEK, SK – Great Plains College would like to thank Wayne Cormier, Director of Swift Current and District Early Childhood Intervention Program (ECIP) and Jordan’s Principle for their generous donation of 10 laptops to support student learning at the Maple Creek Program Centre. Access to technology and laptops can be a large barrier for individuals looking to pursue further education and training; this donation helps remove one more road block for many students.
“This donation has been critical in reaching vulnerable students,” said Kim Wellings, student adviser at Great Plains College. “Use of a laptop not only provides individuals with access to education opportunities that would be otherwise unreachable, but it also gives them another tool to help complete day-to-day life tasks that are made so much easier by having access to technology.”
Great Plains College Maple Creek Program Centre had received a donation of laptops from United Way in 2020, but that inventory has dwindled over the years. Staff at the campus sent out a call for support in an effort to avoid limiting acceptance of students without laptops into the programs that require them for learning. Swift Current and District ECIP and the Jordan’s Principle program answered the call without question to help give more students a direct path to the classroom.
“The youth of our community are our future. This partnership with Great Plains College is a way for us to help our youth along their journey,” said ECIP director Wayne Cormier.
The laptops are provided to students for the duration of their program for use both in the classroom and at home. They will be repurposed for new learners annually. Jordan’s Principle clients and students from Nekaneet will greatly benefit from this resource.
“Technology is a gift that helps improve the quality of life both inside and outside of the classroom. We’re grateful for this generous donation that will benefit students for years to come,” added Wellings.
