MAPLE CREEK, SK – Great Plains College is pleased to announce the addition of a new Essential Skills – Early Childhood Education program at the Maple Creek Program Centre. The new program will run part-time from October to May.
This new offering will combine essential skills training and Early Childhood Education courses so students will be prepared to start a career in childcare as an Early Childhood Educator.
“As our community prepares to welcome new licensed childcare spaces, trained staff will be key and we look forward to helping meet that need in the community,” said Kim Wellings, student adviser at Great Plains College. “This program is unique as it combines Early Childhood Education courses with skills training including problem solving, computer training, communication, resume and job search skills so students are ready to pursue a successful career in childcare.”
The three Early Childhood Education (ECE) courses, Dynamics of Play (ECE 106), Health, Safety and Nutrition (ECE 142) and Child Guidance 1 (HUMD 183) will run consecutively with the Essential Skills programming offered throughout the program.
Successful completion of all three ECE courses meet the Ministry’s minimum training requirements for Level 1 Early Childhood Education certification. These three courses are also recognized as dual credit allowing the student to simultaneously earn Saskatchewan Polytechnic and Grade 12 credits.
