Risk Assessment

Informed safety practitioners understand the dynamic relationship between intelligent recommendations for safety improvements, versus those that are not defensible. Balancing the very real tensions between available resources and protecting those resources is becoming an expected part of the modern safety practitioners intellectual toolbox. This course is the first of a three-part series that equip learners with tools to identify, prioritize and manage risks to the organizations physical, human and financial assets.

Environmental Management

Environmental management has been merging in to general safety management practice since at least the early 90s. Successful safety management requires that practitioners grasp foundational principles of ecology as they relate to industrial and public operations across sectors and jurisdictions. This course is a required for the completion of the Diploma in Health, Safety and Environmental Management (SHEM) offered through Great Plains College.

Psycho-Social Hazards

A reality in safety practice is that in most workplaces, the safety practitioner is alone in identifying, prioritizing and recommending interventions to their senior managers. And a reality in the emerging economy is that virtually every position is required to perform at a higher level with less and less support. Add to that an increasingly hostile public/client environment and the elements for a very stressful, sometimes violent workplace is apparent.

Ergonomics Foundations

The science of matching work to human needs is increasingly recognized as a major component of informed safety interventions, yet applied training in the field is limited. This course begins by meeting the requirements in the BCRSP Study Guide for ergonomics (in the first four weeks) and continues to build skills across a variety of ergonomic principles and applications suitable for all environments. This course is a required for the completion of the Diploma in Health, Safety and Environmental Management (SHEM) offered through Great Plains College.

Organizational Dynamics

Understanding the nature of work and organizational dynamics is the foundation for leadership, change and high performance. Although this topic has been well studied, the elements that separate high performing organizations for low performing ones still remains elusive. This course will walk through the nature of work and ask the fundamental why do organizations exist in their current structure and how to leverage that knowledge in every aspect of management.

Emergency Planning

Begin at any time and set the course schedule that is right for you. Workplaces can be dangerous places. Risks from within and without can result in serious loss of life, property and process interruption. A reasoned, carefully planned emergency response plan is like a fire extinguisher. You hope and pray you'll never need it, but if you do, it has to work properly at that moment. This course equips learners with the basic tools needed to design and implement a practical emergency planning program in any setting.

Environmental Management Applications

Begin at any time and set the course schedule that is right for you.
A continuation of CHSE1205: Environmental Management Foundations, this course is designed to provide the basic knowledge and skills needed to initiate and maintain an environmental management program.

The focus in this course is on the management of specific environmental hazards, and the common tools and processes used in environmental management.

Program Ownership and Motivation

Begin at any time and set the course schedule that is right for you. Traditional health, safety and environmental management programs are owned by senior management. Organizational cultures are undergoing massive changes, and traditional approaches no longer apply in many sectors. Effective health, safety and environmental management programs are driven by all stakeholders that are impacted by them, in most cases, this means that those on the shop floor must learn new process skills to enable their participation.

Workplace Wellness

Begin at any time and set the course schedule that is right for you. We humans are complex creatures. When we're healthy, we're able to contribute richly to personal and corporate goals. If some part of our being is not healthy, it impacts our whole life. Many variables in our lives and our workplaces impact that state of wellness. Understanding those variables, and having some tools to manage their impact, are key to a highly effective health, safety and environmental management program.
